Sustainability, for us, is not a perfect system.

It is a series of intentional, sometimes difficult choices, many of which are still evolving. When we started Himalayan Haat, packaging wasn't something we spent much time thinking about. We were focused on making good products using what we grew. But as we grew, we had to ask ourselves a harder question: How do you build a product that travels well, lasts well, and still stays responsible?

The Materials We Chose

Today, we use glass bottles and jars, resealable kraft paper bags for our products and recycled cardboard fitments for outer packaging. For cushioning, we use pine needles instead of thermocol, which are locally available, biodegradable, and connect us to our landscape.

Why These Choices Matter

Glass is not the easiest option — but it is the most honest one for us. It preserves the product well, does not leach into food, and can be reused multiple times. Resealable kraft paper offers flexibility and reduces reliance on single-use plastic. Recycled cardboard helps minimise new materials. And pine needles — something often considered waste in our region — become a useful resource in our packaging. That's not all — by clearing these highly flammable pine needles from the forest floor, we do our bit to mitigate forest fires in our area.

Each choice comes back to one simple idea: use what is available. Reduce what is harmful. Avoid what we cannot justify.

The Trade-offs We Accept

This approach is not the cheapest. Glass is heavier, which increases shipping costs. It is also fragile, meaning we need to invest more in careful packing and handling. For a business located in the mountains, logistics are already challenging — and sustainable packaging adds another layer of complexity. Even sourcing consistent packaging materials can sometimes be difficult. But these are trade-offs we are willing to accept because convenience and price cannot be the only factors driving our decisions.

What You Can Do

Sustainability does not end when the product reaches you. Our glass jars are designed to be reused — store spices, oils, pickles or use them for small DIY projects. The outer packaging can be repurposed or recycled. The pine needles can be used as mulch in your garden. Small actions add up. We invite you to reuse our glass jars or recycle packaging, and share your sustainable ideas with us—your efforts help us create positive change together.

An Ongoing Process

We do not claim to have figured everything out. There are still gaps. Still compromises. Still, there are things we are trying to improve.

But what we can say is this: Every decision is made with awareness. And that, for us, is what sustainability really looks like.
